Health bosses say there have been significant improvements in Bridlington GP Services as a plan to create a single large practice is floated.
Bridlington has seen notable advancements in its primary care services over the past two years, according to Simon Cox, East Riding of Yorkshire Place Director at Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board. Speaking about the progress, Mr. Cox highlighted the transformation from a challenging situation in the town to a more robust and accessible system.
Over the last two years the number of GP practices in the town has reduced from 6 to 2 and now Mr Cox says there is potential for that to reduce to just a single practice.
"We have seen significant improvements that over the past two years.
Two years ago, we had six practices, many of whom were on the verge of failure. We now have two large practices that are working together and we anticipate by, at the end of this year, that might be one large practice.
I think we have much better access to care in primary care.
Two years ago, one of the practices the two week attendance performance was less than 60%.
Now for both practices, it's over 95%, so access to care through primary care is much, much better."
Speaking to East Riding Council's Health, Care and Wellbeing committee Mr. Cox also emphasised the positive impact on access to primary care in the town resulting from the changes but admitted there are still improvements to be made.
"20 years ago, the standard of access for primary care was to be seen within two days. Now the standard we measured against is two weeks, which shows how we have changed in terms of our ability to access primary care, driven by a number of factors such as covid.
But we obviously want to get to back to the stage where people can be seen much more quickly, which, in Bridlington access for one of the practices in two days is typically about 75%.
So we are much better than we were, but there's still further to go."
