Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team Saves Stranded Spaniel

Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team responded to an emergency call regarding a dog stranded over a cliff at Danes Dyke, near Flamborough on Sunday.

The dog, a lively cocker spaniel named Pretzel, had slipped free from his harness and found himself precariously positioned halfway down a 40-metre cliff face.

With the clock ticking and the drop below posing a serious threat, the rescue team swiftly established a rope rescue system. A cliff technician was lowered to Pretzel's location, who was edging dangerously close to the sheer cliff edge.

A spokesperson for the rescue team reported.

"In a tense few moments, our technician managed to position himself below Pretzel, giving him the confidence to scramble slightly upwards before being secured and lifted to safety,"

The successful operation culminated in a heartwarming reunion, as Pretzel was soon back in the arms of his relieved owner.

Station Officer Jordan Grebby praised the actions of the owners, stating,

“They did exactly the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard. Never attempt a rescue yourself; we have the training and equipment to deal with these situations safely.”

Grebby also highlighted the importance of pet safety, especially in precarious areas.

“It’s worth noting that Pretzel slipped his harness, and the owners had come prepared for a walk. Please always keep dogs on a lead near cliffs.

What starts as a playful adventure can turn into a life-threatening situation in seconds,”

The Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team received commendations for their swift and effective response, ensuring that Pretzel's adventurous spirit did not lead to tragedy. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can arise in coastal areas, encouraging pet owners to remain vigilant while enjoying the outdoors with their furry companions.
