Bridlington Town suffered a heavy first league defeat, in County Durham, on Saturday.
Bridlington Town’s unbeaten start to the league season came to an end as they were thumped 6-0 away to Shildon in what proved to be the hosts’ first points of the season. Bridlington manager Mike Thompson made one change as goalkeeper James Hitchcock was unavailable so Ben Crosher came in for his debut in what proved to be a tough game between the sticks.
It was a fairly even start to the game, in which Shildon almost scored directly from kick off, although Ali Aydemir responded by striking the post for the visitors. Shildon took the lead 24 minutes in, as the ball was played to Wilson Kneeshaw by the penalty spot, who spun well and finished nicely.
Their lead was almost doubled when Dean Thexton was played in and finished nicely, though the offside flag was up. Shildon found their second in controversial fashion after 33 minutes. Crosher came for a cross and missed it, leaving Thexton alone in front of goal, who punched the ball into the net Maradona-style. The Bridlington players were rightly livid, though the referee gave the goal after discussion with the linesman.
A brilliant goal saw Shildon add a third six minutes before the break. Shildon swung in a corner, Ben Trotter won the header, the ball fell to David Atkinson whose acrobatic overhead kick beat the unsighted Crosher.
Bridlington started the second half well after bringing on Jack Yates at half time, though they weren’t able to find a goal. Shildon punished the visitors six minutes into the half as Crosher’s throw to Benn Lewis was intercepted. The ball was squared across to Michael Sweet, whose initial shot was blocked on the line superbly by Jack Bulless, but he was able to tap home the rebound.
Thexton then capitalised on Brid pushing forward, as he was played through in space on the half-way line. He found himself one-on-one with Crosher, with the keeper making an excellent save. The striker picked up the rebound out wide, crossed the ball and found substitute Vinnie Steels at the back post who had an easy tap-in to make it 5-0, just one minute after entering the field.
The final goal of the game came as Shildon broke down the right. Kneeshaw unselfishly squared the ball to Thexton who finished into the empty net to grab his second and Shildon’s sixth.
