Bridlington Town will look to continue a recent turn in form, by extending their winning streak to three games when they make the long journey north to Consett AFC in the Northern Premier League East on Saturday.
The two victories have come in no small part due to the return of Josh Barrett, who scored in Seasiders’ 3-1 home victory over Ashington AFC, his first start since returning from a 3-month layoff due to an ACL injury. Dan Hartley and Sam Leverett were also on the scoresheet at the Mounting Systems Stadium.
A week later, the vice captain struck twice in the first half against Pontefract Collieries, including an outstanding diving header, to send Bridlington into the interval 2-0 ahead. Benn Lewis netted a third in the second half, with the Seasiders picking up an outstanding 3-2 win.
After the game, manager Mike Thompson said:
“We know what Pontefract’s qualities are and we knew what sort of a game it was going to be. Especially in the first half, we alleviated them.”
The gaffer also provided a positive update, adding:
“We hope to have Michael Coulson back next Saturday at Consett.”
Bridlington’s top scorer has been absent for the two victories with a knee injury picked up against Ossett United, so will be a crucial addition to the matchday squad should he be given the go ahead.
Though Thompson’s side do still sit in the relegation zone, the three points in West Yorkshire were the perfect start to what is an important penultimate month of the season, as after the Consett game Bridlington face two sides also fighting relegation in Sherwood Colliery and Heaton Stannington.
Consett themselves aren’t out of it, as they sit 12th, though their 39 points is only six greater than the Seasiders.
They too picked up a 3-2 victory in West Yorkshire last Saturday, earning three points against Liversedge. Isaac Walker’s brace extended his goal tally to 15, 14 of which have come in the league, making him the fourth most prolific in the division.
Brandon Holdsworth has also netted 12 goals for the Steelmen, the first of which came against Bridlington Town earlier in the season in a 2-1 win on his debut.
At the Belle View Stadium last campaign, Bridlington drew 1-1 on the final day of the season to secure their Northern Premier League status for a fourth straight season, again thanks to an equalising goal from Lewis.
The Seasiders ran rampant in the reverse fixture on home soil last season, picking up a 3-0 victory.
