Just 3 days before it is being retired from active service, Filey’s Mersey Class all-weather lifeboat (ALB), Keep Fit Association, was called into action yesterday.
Just after 4pm, Humber Coastguard requested the launch of both Filey’s lifeboats to assist Coastguard Rescue Teams from Filey and Scarborough as well as North Yorkshire Police and the Yorkshire Police Support aeroplane.
As it was shortly before high water, the inshore lifeboat (ILB), (D728 Braund) was quickly launched with Fraser Haddington, Vanessa Thomas and Joe Butcher as crew. A couple of minutes later, the ALB was launched under the command Coxswain / Mechanic Neil Cammish with Ian Butler, Gary Wilson, Tyler Fawthrop, Liam Frampton and Dougie Ward as crew

Both boats covered an area from Hunmanby Gap to the south of Filey to a place known locally as Chimney Hole to the north of Filey Brigg in a search for a vulnerable person who had been missing for quite some time.
After more than two hours searching in cold conditions and with nothing found, both boats were stood down by UK Coastguard and returned to Coble Landing, Filey where they were recovered and made ready for service.
John Ward, Filey Lifeboat Press Officer said:
“Both our boats were quickly launched today. Nothing was found but our crews covered the area quite extensively. At the same time other members of the lifeboat crew continued the training on board the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat which will be replacing the all-weather lifeboat this week. Many thanks to all the crew who attended today for their hard work”
