Blues Fightback in Coastal Derby

Whitby Town roared back from 3-1 down on Saturday.

Visitors Redcar Athletic and a depleted Whitby battled to an entertaining draw on the Yorkshire coast, with the visitors making a nonsense of the gap between the sides.

Debutant goalkeeper Joel Neale saved well from ex-Whitby striker Brad Fewster early on. He then repeated the feat from an effort from distance, only for Louis Johnson to slot in from close range.

At the other end, former Redcar midfielder Layton Watts forced Josh Mazfari to block after a neat move. Johnson then doubled Athletic's advantage on 20 minutes.

However, the half hour saw two trialists with Mazfari blocking from one but powerless to stop the other tapping in the loose ball for 2-1.

Johnson missed out on a first-half hat-trick, instead firing over the crossbar, but Adam Boyes did hit the target, ten minutes before the break as Redcar went 3-1 up.

Missing nine players, Whitby improved after the break, led by Watts who reduced the arrears three minutes into the restart. One of the trialists pounced on a defensive error to tee up Watts' strike.

Johnson flashed narrowly off target before Mazfari reacted well again to deny Michael Woods.

As Whitby pushed numbers forward, overlapping right-back Conner Smith centered for Watts who slid wide. At the other end, Danny Lay fired over the top for the away side. However, Whitby were to strike just after the hour. The same who set up the Blues' opener, released Watts, who cut back for Woods to strike home a leveller.

Boyes dragged wide for Redcar late on, with James Harrison and a trialist coming close for Whitby at the end.
