Today sees the launch of Mental Health Awareness Week, the UK’s national week to raise awareness of mental health
Perhaps fittingly after months of lockdown the theme this year is about getting out and being around nature.
Throughout the week, Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind are inviting people to try out a range of well-being and outdoor based activities.
Service manager Catherine Mason says it's an important week
Catherine says they are putting on a week of activities designed to get people out and about after lockdown, make new connections and try something different. All activities will be free of charge and people don’t need to be current service users of Mind to participate, however people need to pre-book a place as numbers will be limited due to Covid-19 compliance
The week is also being used as a focus to encourage more people to volunteer to help support local mental health organisations. Catherine says the volunteers at SWR Mind are a key part of their service.
The activities on offer this week included :
Monday 10th May:
- Mental health drop in for people to talk to the team about support available
- An early evening Seafront walk to enjoy a bit of fresh air and meet our team with refreshments provided. Well behaved dogs welcome!
Tuesday 11th May:
- An introduction to volunteering session for people interested in providing support to someone experiencing mental ill health. The session will be recorded and made available online for people to view at a later date.
- An Art Therapy Session
Wednesday 12th May:
- Outdoor relaxation and visualisation session with a free yoga mat to keep
- A clay crafting session
- A workshop on managing anxieties
- Outdoor afternoon tea and garden games
Thursday 13th May:
- Photography walk in Peasholm Park
- An evening session of introduction to volunteering with SWR Mind
Friday 14th May
- Coffee and a chat in Whitby
- Wellbeing walk in Pannett Park
- Outdoor Yoga with The Frog Project
Saturday 15th May
- An introduction to volunteering with SWR Mind
- Evening Zoom Quiz – teams welcome, prizes on offer!
