Train Fire at Village Near Whitby

Firefighters had to again deal with the regular problem of fires caused by trains on the Esk Valley's rail lines, on Tuesday.

Officers from Whitby and Lythe responded to a lineside fire, in Sleights, around 9.45am.

It was caused by sparks from a steam train.

Firefighters located a fire measuring approximately 10 x 4 metres.

They used a single hose reel jet to extinguish.

Last month, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which operates steam trains in the Esk Valley, opted to reduce its timetable to cut risks of fire during last month's heatwave.
