Could you adopt a railway station?
That's the question being posed by the Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership.
They are looking for people in Seamer, Crossgates and Eastfield to form a new group to help look after Seamer station.
Rachel Osbourne is from the group, she says there is backing for the scheme from the rail companies.
The Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership (YCCRP) is partnering with TransPennine Express (TPE) and Seamer Parish Council to establish a station adoption group for Seamer Station. This initiative aims to enhance the station environment and passenger experience by engaging the local community in its upkeep and beautification.
Rachel says there are a number of other adoption groups already operating along the Yorkshire Coast which are helping to improve the environment of the area's railway stations.
Rachel Says that Seamer station is at an important location on the Yorkshire Coast rail network.
While Seamer Station serves as a crucial interchange between lines, connecting passengers from Bridlington and Filey to York, its island platform limits the scope for large-scale improvements. However, TPE has ambitious plans to revitalize the station with a focus on biodiversity. These include introducing planters, bug hotels, and nesting boxes for birds and bats.
Further proposals include the installation of green shelter roofs and water butts, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices. These additions would not only improve the station's aesthetics but also contribute to a more eco-friendly environment.
The YCCRP emphasizes that a well-maintained and visually appealing station contributes to a positive experience for passengers and can deter antisocial behaviour. The proposed enhancements aim to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, particularly for those facing train delays.
Beyond physical improvements, the adoption group intends to install information boards highlighting local attractions, walking trails, and nearby points of interest like Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve. This would position Seamer Station not merely as a transit point but as a gateway to the surrounding area, encouraging exploration and boosting local tourism.
Call for Volunteers
The YCCRP is actively seeking individuals from Seamer and the neighbouring communities of Crossgates and Eastfield to join the station adoption group.
