Aldi New Store Plan For Eastfield Progressing

Aldi’s plan for a new supermarket near Scarborough is progressing amid proposals for the demolition of the site’s current buildings.

Aldi Stores Ltd has applied for permission to demolish the two vacant buildings at the former driving test centre site on Cayton Low Road in Eastfield, Scarborough, as part of its plans to open a new supermarket.

In June, the German multi-national company announced its plans for a new discount food store, which it has said would provide investment of around £7m in the local economy and create 40 new, full-time equivalent jobs.

The company said:

“There is a clear need for an additional supermarket in Eastfield, which Aldi would deliver.”

Plans submitted to North Yorkshire Council state that the buildings proposed for demolition are a former workshop in the centre of the site, and a former office building, both of which were part of the former vehicle goods testing station and driving test centre.

“All demolition work is to be carried out using operatives appropriately skilled in this type of work. The demolition process will be undertaken using established demolition techniques, which are not associated with any high risk of accident,” the plan states.

It notes: “The contractor will be required to protect site operatives and the general public during the course of the works. Works will be undertaken to ensure any disturbance to neighbours and the general public is minimised.”

Commenting on the proposed new store, Aldi said: “This site is ideally located to improve the local retail offering and reduce the need for residents to travel further afield to meet their food shopping needs, as the closest Aldi store is located 3.5 miles away in Scarborough.

“The proposed store would provide the local community with an award-winning range of low-cost, high-quality products, improving the local retail offering for customers.”
