It's been called to get local peoples views on two questions, one about second homes in the area and the other about local government reorganisation.
A Parish Poll was demanded at a meeting of the Whitby Parish (Whitby Town) held on Thursday 12 May 2022. Two questions were proposed and agreed, and a poll will be held on Monday 13th June to pose the questions to the residents of Whitby Parish.
The questions being asked are:
- Should all new build and additional housing in Whitby Parish be restricted to full time local occupation as a primary residence only and forever (in perpetuity)?
- Do you want to stay in the same area committee as Scarborough in the new North Yorkshire unitary council?
Town Councillor Chris Riddolls is one of those who called for the poll.
He says the housing question is of vital importance.
Town Councillor Riddolls says he's also concerned about the plans for Whitby and Scarborough to come under one local area committee when the borough council is abolished next April.
A Parish Poll may be demanded before the end of a parish meeting on any question arising at the meeting. The purpose of the parish poll is to ascertain whether the opinion of the meeting reflects that of the majority of electors in the parish. Polls can be held in respect of a particular question or in relation to an appointment of office, but the result of the poll is in no way binding on any organisations or authority. It is in essence an opinion poll.
No poll cards are required for today's vote. Whitby residents can simply attend their polling station between 4pm and 9pm to cast their votes. There is no provision for postal votes.
The count of the votes will follow the close of polling and the result will be publicised. The outcome of the poll is no more and no less than an expression of the views of the electorate of the parish who have voted in the poll and is not binding on any organisation.
