48 Hour Running Challenge Starts in Scarborough

A community running group in Scarborough are undertaking a 48 hour run this weekend as a fundraiser for Saint Catherine's.

The runners from Run Scarborough will be taking it in turns to run hour long shifts in pairs.

Paul Sutherns is one of the organisers.

Paul says the response from the runners has been amazing and says filling the overnight slots was easy.

The fundraiser starts at 2pm on Friday March 4, continuing through the day and night until 2pm on Sunday March 6.

Participants will run in pairs from the Spa, along the seafront and Marine Drive towards the Sea Life Centre, for 30 minutes, then turn around and run back, handing over to the next pair when they arrive at the Spa.

Last year the group did a 36-hour run for Saint Catherine’s and raised £2,000, which has spurred them on to come back with an even bigger event for 2022.

Group leader Paul Sutherns said:

“We were over the moon with how it went last time. It was our first charity event and we didn’t know how much we would raise. We’re hoping to match or even beat that amount this time and everyone is really looking forward to it.”

Susan Stephenson, communications and marketing manager at Saint Catherine’s, said:

“We are thrilled that Run Scarborough have chosen to support us again with this amazing challenge. We wish all the runners well and thank you to each and every one of you for your dedication and kindness.”

Run Scarborough started around 16 months ago and has grown quickly, with more than 550 members currently. All the slots for the 48-hour run have already been filled – with some runners having taken part last year and some new to the event.

The group recently won the Run Together Group of the Year award from England Athletics.
