There is a call for some streets in Whitby to have speed limits lower than 20 miles per hour.
The Town Council has given it's support to the 20s Plenty Campaign which is calling for default 20 mile per hour speed limits in urban areas.
But Whitby Town Councillor, Bob Dalrymple, thinks in parts of the town, the limit needs to be lower.
Following a vote at the council's Town Development and Improvement committee just before Christmas the Town Council says it will now be asking the County Council to investigate a 20mph scheme in Whitby.
However, despite backing the campaign, some town councillors feel a 20 limit wouldn't be right for all parts of the town saying that some roads should remain at 30mph while other roads would benefit from limits lower than 20mph.
Town councillor Noreen Wilson says the lower limit should certainly be bought in around schools.
The Town Development and Improvement committee passed a resolution last month saying that the council:
- Supports the 20’s Plenty for North Yorkshire campaign;
- Calls on North Yorkshire County Council to work in coordination with Whitby Town Council to investigate a scheme to implement 20mph in Whitby; and
- Will write to North Yorkshire County Council to support any neighbouring authority requesting 20mph speed limits on streets throughout North Yorkshire where people live, work, shop, play or learn, with 30mph as the exception on those roads, where full consideration of the needs of vulnerable road users allows a higher limit.
