Whitby Dementia Friendly Community is supporting Dementia Action Week, an awareness campaign bringing people and organisations together to act on dementia.

This year they will be promoting free activities for people living with dementia and their carers’.
Whitby Dementia Friendly Community hopes to help create an environment where people affected with dementia are able to continue to participate, as fully as possible, in their local community. The Community is made up of local organisations and interested individuals, including people living with dementia, who meet every two months at the Coliseum. Meetings are open to everyone living in Whitby and the surrounding rural district.

Welcome to Danby Lodge
Danby Lodge National Park Centre, NYMNP YO21 2NB

Join us for a gentle and uplifting sensory nature walk at Danby Lodge. Together we’ll explore the sights, sounds, textures and scents of the National Park through a relaxed, guided walk with plenty of time
to pause, chat and enjoy the landscape.

After the walk, take part in a nature inspired craft activity
where you can create something to take home as a reminder of the day.
We’ll finish with a shared lunch, offering a friendly space to unwind, socialise and connect with others.

A calm, welcoming experience for all - perfect for enjoying nature, creativity and good company.

Drop - in Information session

Deborah Senior from Alzheimer’s Society
will be hosting an information session at the
Coliseum Community Café, Victoria Place, Whitby YO21 1EZ.

Members of the public, unpaid carers, people living with dementia
and anyone concerned about their memory are warmly invited to attend,
ask questions, and access advice and guidance in a friendly, informal setting.

Wednesday 20th May
Dementia Forward
will be hosting two drop - in sessions in Whitby
10am - 12 noon at the Coliseum Whitby YO21 1EZ
and
1 pm - 3 pm Kirkham Close Community Centre Whitby YO21 1JR

With light refreshments, games, quizzes, and gentle entertainment,
it’s a relaxed social drop-in open to all, building community, companionship, and support.
Welcome Wednesday is a warm and welcoming weekly wellbeing café at Kirkham Close Community Centre held every Wednesday from 1-3pm. Created to support people with memory problems and their carers, it offers a friendly space to connect, share, and find guidance from a dementia support advisor.

Virtual Dementia Tour
Time slots available between 10:00am – 1:00pm (carers)
and 1:30-4pm (professionals)
at the Rugby Club, White Leys Road Whitby YO21 3PB

Thanks to funding gained by Carers Plus Yorkshire in partnership with
the Alzheimer’s Society, this unique, hands-on experience uses specialist equipment to simulate the sensory and cognitive challenges faced by people living with dementia. Participants will wear goggles, headphones and other equipment to complete everyday tasks, offering a first-hand insight into how dementia can affect perception, communication and daily life.
The session is designed to help attendees better understand
the emotional and practical impact of dementia.
